Douglas Luiz spoke of his delight at equalling an Aston Villa record that has stood for 17 years.

The Brazilian midfielder converted a late penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time to send Villa into a dramatic 2-1 lead against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

In doing so, Luiz became the first Villa player to score in four consecutive Premier League home matches since Gareth Barry in 2006.

Reflecting on his achievement, he told VillaTV of his happiness.

“I saw the news before the game,” he said.

“And (that) I can score in the game, I’m so happy for this.

“I need to continue training so hard, I’ve scored four goals in the four consecutive games and I am so happy.”

Luiz was made to wait before netting his third goal of the season from the penalty spot.

After Ollie Watkins was upended in the penalty area, a lengthy VAR review took place before Villa’s penalty was confirmed and Luiz had the chance to fire the hosts ahead from 12 yards.

Asked how hard it was to keep his concentration, the 25-year-old said: “It’s hard, to tell the truth.

“But I stayed focused and just waited for the ref, I can’t change something.

“And I just focused on the penalty.”

Trailing to Odsonne Edouard’s strike early in the second half, Villa levelled in the 87th minute thanks to Jhon Durán’s stunning finish.

Villa Park then went wild as Luiz converted from the spot before Leon Bailey added a third even deeper into added time as Villa made it nine successive Premier League wins on home soil.

And Luiz admitted the backing of the home fans plays a big part in Villa’s superb form in B6.

“The atmosphere here is crazy for us, on the pitch we’re feeling this,” he said.

“The fans push us and we can see in the game here, the last 10 minutes we scored three goals.

“And then we’re happy.”

He added: “We created so much in the first half.

“In the second half we created again.

“In the last 10 minutes, we scored and everyone is so happy.”
