On this day in 1949, a crowd of 69,191 packed into Villa Park for the visit of Arsenal. Although the figure wasn’t as high as the crowds for FA Cup ties against Walsall in 1930 and Derby County in 1946, it was a record league attendance for the stadium.
The huge gathering witnessed a closely-contested game, Villa edging to a 1-0 victory thanks to a Billy Goffin goal. Alex Massie’s team finished 10th in the table that season, while the Gunners were fifth. Portsmouth were the champions.
