Ian Maatsen put in a Player of the Match performance as Holland booked their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Under-21 European Championships with a 1-0 win over Portugal.

Playing close to 70 minutes with 10 players after Ruben van Bommel's early dismissal in Žilina, Slovakia, Michael Reiziger's side secured a last four spot thanks to Ernest Poku's 84th-minute strike, assisted by Maatsen.

The left-back, who completed the 90 minutes, was awarded Player of the Match at full-time, capping off a fine performance, as he and his team-mates now look forward to a semi-final clash on Wednesday.

At the last four stage, they will face England, who secured their spot in the semis with an impressive 3-1 win over pre-tournament favourites Spain.

Santi Denia's side, who Lee Carsley's Young Lions defeated in the final two years ago, were 2-0 down in 15 minutes thanks to goals from Manchester City's James McAtee and Harvey Elliott.

Javi Guerra halved the deficit from the spot six minutes before half-time, but a 94th-minute penalty from Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson sealed the triumph for England. Both Andrés García and Samuel Iling Jr were unused substitutes for their respective sides.
