Ian Maatsen completed another 81 minutes for Holland as the Jong Oranje fell to a 2-1 defeat to Denmark in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship on Sunday evening.

After opening their campaign with a 2-2 draw with Finland in Slovakia on Thursday, Michael Reiziger’s side took the lead 19 minutes in through an own goal in Prešov, though a brace from Newcastle United’s Will Osula would condemn them to defeat.

Maatsen was deployed in a more familiar left-back role for Holland, having played 90 minutes in midfield against Finland. He and his team-mates must now beat Ukraine in their final group game on Wednesday (ko 5pm) to progress to the quarter-finals.

Santi Denia’s side have already qualified for the knockout stages after beating hosts Slovakia in their first game, with a meeting with Italy – who are also on six points after two outings – on Tuesday (ko 8pm) set to determine the Group A winner.

Kadan Young

Saturday also saw both Kadan Young and Triston Rowe feature for England’s Under-19s, who opened up their UEFA European Under-19 Championship campaign in Romania with a 2-2 draw with Norway.

Young provided an impressive assist for the Young Lions’ opening goal of the tournament, weaving away from the Norwegian defence and driving into the final third, teeing up Brighton & Hove Albion’s Tom Watson to give England the lead after 11 minutes.

After Norway spun the game on its head with two goals of their own before the break, a late penalty from Tottenham Hotspur’s Mikey Moore secured a point for Will Antwi’s youngsters in Ploiești.

Both Young and Rowe started the game, with the right-back completing 45 minutes and the former being replaced 15 minutes from time. England take on Germany in their second Group B fixture on Tuesday (ko 6pm).
