The Last Meeting

The last meeting between these two sides came just over two weeks ago - an FA Cup third-round clash at Villa Park in which Unai Emery's side prevailed 2-1.

On a special night where all corners of the club came together to celebrate Aston Villa's 150th anniversary, it was West Ham - in Graham Potter's first game in charge - who struck first just nine minutes in, through Lucas Paquetá.

But Emery's men rallied after the break under the lights in B6, wearing their special, black, commemorative strip. Amadou Onana levelled matters from close range on 71 minutes, before Morgan Rogers struck five minutes later to seal Villa's passage into round four.

Unai Emery revealed captain John McGinn has resumed training with his teammates ahead of the clash, having missed the last four through injury, though Pau Torres, Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley remain out.

Andrés García and Donyell Malen could be handed Aston Villa debuts, the latter having remained an unused substitute in last weekend's trip to Arsenal, and been ineligible for the Champions League meeting with Monaco.

Graham Potter will make a late call on Crysencio Summerville, who sustained a hamstring injury in the FA Cup meeting two weeks ago, though Niclas Füllkrug is still out, alongside long-term absentees Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen.

Managers' Pre-Match Thoughts

“Very important, those three points on Sunday against West Ham. Very difficult, because all matches in the Premier League are very difficult. Of course, West Ham, they are not being consistent, but they have now a new coach. Tactically, they are going to improve, playing matches, and they have very good players as well.”

Unai Emery

“It's always a tough game at Aston Villa. It's always a challenging environment, and with Unai Emery doing such a good job there, and competing in the UEFA Champions League, it's always a test. We did OK in the first half in the FA Cup, and we've had a good week, so we have to go there and try to compete.”
