John McGinn felt Aston Villa were unfortunate to come away from Saturday’s game against Arsenal empty-handed.

The club captain and his teammates twice took the lead against the title contenders at Villa Park before conceding twice in injury time to lose 4-2.

McGinn was frustrated after the Villans came away with nothing to show for their efforts.

Aston Villa hosted Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

He said: “I don’t think we rolled over and went down with a whimper. No one could have argued if it was 2-2.

“They had a few good chances, we had a couple of good chances. It was a tough game.

“In those moments when it gets to the 90th minute, we’ve just got to be so focussed. He’s miss-hit his shot and it’s so unfortunate to go in off Emi.

“We didn’t get the break on that occasion, but we’d be kidding ourselves if we said we deserved to win today.”

Goals from Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho handed Villa a 2-1 advantage at half-time in front of a fired-up home crowd.

Leon Bailey was denied by the crossbar with the score at 2-2, and McGinn said there were positives to take as his team look to end a three-game losing run next time out.

“It’s tough to reflect on so quickly. It was a very unfortunate goal, the third one,” he said.

“We did have chances to go and win the game. It was one of those games that was good for the neutral because it was an entertaining watch, but it’s not how we want to play at home.

“We want to control games. The manager’s given us a great platform to build on a play here. Today, we didn’t manage to do that.

“It’s a really frustrating defeat. That’s three in a row now and it’s something we need to amend quickly.

“There were parts of it that were positive; we certainly took the game to Arsenal.”
