Emi Martínez cut a frustrated figure after Aston Villa fell to a 4-2 defeat against Leicester City.
Villa twice took the lead courtesy of Ollie Watkins and Harry Souttar’s own goal, only for the Foxes to hit back through James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho before Tete put the visitors ahead in first-half injury time.
Unai Emery’s side battled throughout to get back on level terms, dominating both possession and shots on goal, but it was Leicester who claimed the spoils after substitute Dennis Praet added a fourth.
Speaking to VillaTV post-match, goalkeeper Martínez said: “We started really well, obviously we like to play a 3pm kick-off at Villa Park, I think we’ve done well so far this season
“It was just a couple of mistakes, three mistakes for them to score, we gave them the lead.
“After that it was quite hard to come back.”
He added: “Obviously there were errors, big errors.
“But that’s what a team is about. We started the second half trying to get those mistakes away, we couldn’t, they took the lead again through another mistake.
“But I’m okay with mistakes, I’ve made a few mistakes here as well.
“I couldn’t save any of the shots, I think they had four shots and scored four goals.
“It was a frustrating day for me as well.”
Defeat ended a four-match unbeaten sequence in the Premier League as Villa suffered only their second loss under head coach Emery.
And Martínez felt it was an opportunity lost for the Villans, who had plenty of momentum behind them as they targeted a place in the top 10.
But they will now be looking to make amends next weekend as they make the trip to Manchester City.
“I think we were unbeaten in January, three wins and one draw,” said the Villa No.1.
“We thought it was the time to make that next step, to be closer to Europe.
“It is a really, really hard one to take.”
