Ollie Watkins is expecting a tough test when Aston Villa face HŠK Zrinjski on Thursday night.

Villa were the dominant side when the two teams met in the reverse fixture in early October, but had to wait until the 94th minute before John McGinn headed home a dramatic late winner.

It was almost the last action of the game as the Villans secured their first points of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Unai Emery’s side head into matchday six having already secured their place in the knockout stages, but know they still need a point to guarantee top spot and a place straight into the Round of 16.

“It’s going to be a tough match,” said Watkins at Wednesday’s pre-match media conference.

“The experience of coming away to stadiums in Europe has always been difficult.

Like the boss said, our first game against Legia, they made it very difficult and we didn’t come away with a victory.

“So, it’s not as easy as people think to come to places like this and win.

“We’ll be approaching the game with a strong mindset and respecting everyone coming into the game."

Watkins and co threw everything at their Group E opponents back at Villa Park but were denied time and again by Zrinjski goalkeeper Marko Maric.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Premijer Liga champions come into the encounter on three points, with a dramatic 4-3 triumph over AZ Alkmaar on matchday one followed by four successive defeats.

The Villans will be striving to finish their group stage campaign on a high, and striker Watkins, who has 13 goals to his name this term, is optimistic about the club’s chances in Europe this season.

“I feel like the team have full confidence in themselves whichever game we go into,” he added.

“We have a style of play that we like to stick to and have a real identity.

“So, whichever game we go into, we always feel confident we can beat our opposition and then it goes from there.”
