Aston Villa recorded an impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday to get their Under-18 Premier League Cup campaign up and running with all three points.

Omari Kellyman opened the scoring for the Young Lions just after the half-hour mark before Kobei Moore added a second in the 75th minute at Bodymoor Heath.

Villa find themselves in Group C of the cup competition alongside United, Arsenal and Newcastle United, with a trip to the Gunners next up in early October.

Firstly, the Young Lions, who have now recorded successive wins, are back in league action later this month and an away clash against West Ham United.

Kerr Smith produced a superb goal-line block to deny Adam Berry what looked to be a certain opener for the visitors, before James Wright tipped over from Maximillian Oyedele.

But it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Kellyman followed up to convert the rebound after United goalkeeper Tom Wooster had parried Rory Wilson’s strike.

Ethan Wheatley fired off target for the away side after the interval while Wilson found the side-netting at the other end.

Moore saw two strikes in succession parried by Wooster before Smith sent a hopeful long-range strike narrowly wide.

And it was Villa who grabbed the crucial second goal, doubling their lead with 15 minutes remaining as Moore slotted home substitute Kadan Young’s cross from close range.

Striker Wilson was again thwarted by Wooster as play flowed from end to end, the visitors sending an effort across the face of goal.

Wilson had a golden chance to add a third late on but couldn’t find the target, although it was Villa who were celebrating a superb win at the final whistle.
