Emi Martínez and Argentina suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener in Qatar.
La Albiceleste dominated the first half and took the lead courtesy of Lionel Messi’s 10th-minute penalty, while also seeing three goals disallowed for offside before the break.
But Saudi Arabia turned the game on its head early in the second period and scored twice in the first eight minutes through Saleh Alshehri and Salem Aldawsari, registering the biggest shock of the 2022 tournament so far.
Defeat ended Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten record but they will be looking to bounce back when they face Mexico and Poland in their remaining Group C fixtures.
Martínez and Argentina are next in action against Mexico on Saturday (ko 7pm).
