Lucas Digne was handed his Aston Villa debut against Manchester United while fellow new signing Philippe Coutinho was named among the substitutes.
Left-back Digne arrived on Friday and was immediately awarded his Villa bow while attacking midfielder Coutinho, who also joined earlier this week, was included on the bench for the Premier League encounter as he looks to step up his match fitness.
Head coach Steven Gerrard showed two changes from Monday’s FA Cup defeat to United at Old Trafford.
Digne came in for Matt Targett while Morgan Sanson replaced John McGinn, who missed the encounter due to a one-match suspension.
Fit-again Ashley Young returned to Villa’s matchday 20 and was joined among the substitutes by talented teenager Kaine Kesler Hayden following his return from a loan spell at Swindon Town.
