Aston Villa Women finish the month of April this weekend when they welcome Manchester United to the Banks's Stadium.

Carla Ward's side enter the clash with some momentum behind them.

Our last outing came at the very start of the month when we edged out Tottenham Hotspur at The Hive.

Ramona Petzelberger's late header sealed the points in North London and gave us a deserved victory after a resolute display against an impressive Spurs outfit.

Exactly 21 days will have since passed by the time we kick-off against Marc Skinner's Red Devils on Sunday evening.

Internationals and FA Cup fixtures, respectively, means the Villans have had to sit on that success for a good while but they are once again raring to go.

Sunday's task, however, represents one of the toughest the division has to offer.

If December's meeting with United is anything to go by, Ward will have her work cut out in preparing to stop her opponents in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

This weekend’s visitors to the Banks’s Stadium are Manchester United.

Marc Skinner’s side have enjoyed a largely successful 2021/22 campaign which began with plenty of question marks.

The Red Devils have made eight additions on the pitch since the start of the season, on top of bringing Skinner in to replace the outgoing Casey Stoney on the touchline.

Unbeaten against sides outside of the top four, United have put themselves in prime position to qualify for next season’s Champions League with only a few more hurdles left to clear.

City are lurking dangerously close, however, and will be hoping to pip their neighbours to the third and final spot come Sunday, May 8th.

In terms of talent, United’s squad is stacked with British and international stars.

Alessia Russo leads the team in scoring, while Ella Toone’s assist numbers are equally impressive.

Mary Earps has also been a mainstay in between the sticks.

Goals against United have been extremely difficult to come by since Villa’s return to the top flight, so a result this weekend at the Banks’s Stadium would be a significant landmark for the club.

Three To Watch

Ella Toone – 100 appearances for Manchester United Women and the very first player to do so since the club’s formation in 2018. Still only 22 years of age and an established international already.

Alessia Russo – Fresh from scoring two goals against Everton at Old Trafford, Russo leads the line for Manchester United Women with aplomb. Top scorer this season with 11 (and counting) goals in all competitions.

Katie Zelem – Captain and set-piece specialist. Scored two goals direct from two separate corners in United’s 4-0 win over Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village in March.
