Craig Shakespeare said the Aston Villa squad were disappointed to exit the Carabao Cup after pushing Chelsea all the way.

A much-changed side created a host of chances during normal time before eventually going down on penalties.

The assistant head coach believes the team can hold their heads high following their spirited showing.

He said: “We’re disappointed to go out. We came here with a game plan and we picked a team that needed minutes.

“At times, Chelsea’s superiority in terms of possession meant we had to hang in there at times in the second half.

“The overall performance and chances we created, the lads can be very, very pleased with. However, they’re disappointed in the changing room to go out.”

Cameron Archer stole the headlines with a hat-trick in the previous round against Barrow and he netted again at Stamford Bridge to send the match to spot kicks.

Shakespeare was happy to see him grabbing his opportunity once again.

“Cameron’s come from nowhere. From catching the eye in pre-season to scoring the hat-trick at Barrow," he said.

“He can be really pleased with his overall performance today - the work that he did without the ball and the work he did to stop them playing through the lines.

“He scored a great goal and he can be happy with that.”
