John McGinn helped Scotland to an important 1-0 victory over Moldova on Saturday night in their bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The Aston Villa midfielder started the encounter at Hampden Park and completed 65 minutes, with the clash settled by Lyndon Dykes’ early finish from close range.

McGinn returned to contention having missed his nation’s defeat in Denmark on Wednesday as he was following government guidelines with regards to Covid-19.

The crucial qualifying win leaves Scotland in third place in Group F after five matches, two points behind second-placed Israel.

McGinn and the Tartan Army face fourth-placed Austria next up in Vienna on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm).

Scotland, having reached Euro 2020 earlier this summer, are bidding to compete in their first World Cup since 1998.

Elsewhere, Conor Hourihane featured from the bench as Republic of Ireland drew with Azerbaijan in Dublin on Saturday.

The on-loan midfielder was introduced after 63 minutes and helped his country fight back to take a point ahead of their next qualifier against Serbia at home on Tuesday (ko 7.45pm).
