With the game deep in first half stoppage time, Southampton struck again when Thierry Small netted to double their lead.

A fast start to the second half saw Lewis Payne fire home from a tight angle less than a minute after the restart.

Payne was on hand to make it 4-0 on the hour mark, and that’s the way it stayed as Delaney’s team fell to a second straight PL2 loss.

The result leaves Villa third in the table ahead of an away game against Reading on Monday, 8 November.
