Ollie Watkins felt that Aston Villa never really got going during the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg gave Spurs the lead in the first half before Watkins' first goal of the campaign levelled the game up at 1-1, but the home side retook the lead just four minutes later and saw the game out to secure all three points.

Watkins was disappointed that Villa didn't produce a team performance to match the victories over Everton and Manchester United.

Speaking to VillaTV after the final whistle, he said: “It’s a tough one, because we’ve done well to get back to 1-1 but they scored and it killed the game really.

“First 10 minutes, we were good but from then onwards, we never really got going.

"As a team collectively, we weren’t great.

“Against Manchester United and Everton we showed a great team performance and I don’t think we did that."

Watkins' start to the 2021/22 campaign was disrupted by injury, but now that he is back to full fitness with his first goal of the season under his belt, the striker is confident that there is plenty more to come.

“I feel like I’ve had a slow start, I’ve missed a few chances after coming back from my injury," he explained.

“I’ve put in some good performances, I’ve just been unlucky in front of goal.

“It’s nice to get off the mark and hopefully I can get up to speed and push on now."
