John McGinn spoke of the disappointment of both himself and his team-mates following Aston Villa’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Bertrand Traore’s superb strike handed Villa a half-time lead but it was a frustrating second period for the hosts as Bruno Fernandes’ disputed penalty levelled matters before Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani inflicted defeat.

To make matters worse, Ollie Watkins then saw red in the 89th minute for a second bookable offence.

And, reflecting on the afternoon, McGinn was clear in his reaction to the game.

“Disappointing,” he told VillaTV.

“I think the penalty early the second half took the wind out of our sails.

“Really good first-half performance, put in a lot of effort, just couldn’t quite match that in the second half.

“(We were) picked off in the end by a very good team.”

“We were aware that Villa haven’t beaten Man Utd here (at Villa Park) since 1995 so we wanted to be the team to do that, unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but there certainly were opportunities to do that.”

McGinn added: “The general feeling (in the dressing room) is disappointment.

“We’re ambitious, we want to climb up the league, we want to be a proper Aston Villa team.

“We were aware that Villa haven’t beaten Man Utd here (at Villa Park) since 1995 so we wanted to be the team to do that, unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but there certainly were opportunities to do that.”
