Dean Smith was left to reflect on a game of two halves after Aston Villa’s goalless draw against Wolves.

Villa were the dominant force in the first half of the encounter, Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa both hitting the crossbar.

It was a different story after the break as Wolves went on the front foot and hit the woodwork themselves through Conor Coady before Romain Saiss sent the rebound over from close range.

Emi Martinez then thwarted Wolves skipper Coady while the hosts almost snatched victory in injury time when Watkins and Konsa again went close.

A point apiece was a fair reflection on the encounter as it ended honours even.

Speaking to VillaTV post-match, Smith said: “I think if we have won it at the end there, it would have felt a little bit unjust, such were the big chances they’ve had in the second half.

“First half was as good as we’ve played since December, I think.

“There was some really good play there, we pressed well, won the ball back in their half really well and created some really good chances, hit the upright a couple of times and had the majority of play and chances.

“I wanted the same again second half, I thought they improved second half, I must admit, and I thought they were the better team in the second half.

“We didn’t deal well enough with some second-phase set-pieces and they’ve had a couple of big chances that we got away with. One with a good save from Emi and one where I think Ezri just gets dragged in with Saiss, Coady comes in at the back post, hits the post, and they put it over from a yard.

“Relieved with that but pleased with the point and pleased with parts of the performance, especially the first half.”
