Emi Martínez saved a penalty but could do nothing to keep out the rebound as Argentina opened their Copa America 2021 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Chile on Monday night.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper, earning his third cap for his country, was making his first appearance at a major international tournament.
And Martínez helped Argentina get off the mark in Group A with a point in Rio de Janeiro.

Ahead of kick-off, a stunning tribute was paid to Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who passed away last year, with a light show and holographic projections of the iconic 1986 World Cup winner displayed on the pitch.
Argentina took the lead in the 33rd minute courtesy of an excellent 25-yard free-kick from Lionel Messi.
Chile drew level just before the hour mark as Arturo Vidal was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area, coming after a VAR review advised the referee to view the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Martínez initially came to Argentina’s rescue as he superbly saved Vidal’s spot-kick, pushing the strike one-handed on to the crossbar, however Eduardo Vargas was first to follow up and head home the rebound.
And that was how it remained as both sides shared the spoils.
Argentina face Uruguay next up on Saturday morning (ko 1am) as they look to record their first victory of the tournament.
