Ollie Watkins spoke of his frustration after Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat at Burnley on Wednesday night.

Villa dominated the first half at Turf Moor and took the lead courtesy of Watkins’ 10th goal of the season, although they could well have been further ahead at the interval.

They paid the price when the Clarets levelled early in the second half, only for captain Jack Grealish to sweep Dean Smith’s side back in front.

But Burnley scored twice in three minutes late on to inflict defeat and leave Villa wondering what might have been.

Speaking post-match, Watkins said: “Obviously it’s tough to lose.

“I don’t think we started either half very well, but we went ahead in the game twice and we should have seen it out.

“We should go into half-time 2-0 up, I should go through and score the one-on-one, but we didn’t.

“Conceded from a set-piece but Jack bounced back and scored for us, and from there we should see it out with about 15 minutes to go.

“We should slow the game down and play ugly, really, but I don’t think we did that.”

Watkins has now scored two in two games having gone since early November without getting the goals his performances have deserved.

And while happy to find the net, the 25-year-old insists points always matter more.

“Going a few games without a goal, it played on my mind,” Watkins added.

“It’s nice to be back on the scoresheet but it’s a shame it couldn’t go towards three points.”
