Aston Villa Women endured a tough afternoon up north on Sunday afternoon, losing 7-0 to Manchester City.

The hosts took the lead through Lauren Hemp inside two minutes, and never looked back.

Hemp added to her own tally before the half-time interval, while Jill Scott and Georgia Stanway also notched.

Nat Haigh scored an unfortunate own goal before Ellen White and Chloe Kelly further dented Villa's resolve.

The result is a severely deflating one for Gemma Davies's side, who hadn't lost in such heavy fashion since Everton's visit to Banks's Stadium in October.

The game had barely began when Hemp broke free at the back post to turn home Chloe Kelly's cross and set City on their way.

Villa did respond well initially, seeing a Nadine Hanssen effort brush past the post from inside the area.

City, however, doubled their advantage shortly after.

Scott headed home whilst unmarked, and the home side would soon be out of sight.

City scored a further four times before the break, putting a demoralising mark on the scoreline.

Villa were more competitive in the second half, limiting the home side to just a few efforts on goal until Kelly wrapped up the scoring on 79 minutes.

The squad must now regroup ahead of a key league game against Reading next weekend.
