Aston Villa suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to high-flying Liverpool at Anfield.

The visitors stood firm under pressure from the Reds, Emi Martínez producing several fine saves, but their resistance was broken by Mohamed Salah’s 67^th-minute penalty.

Villa pushed for a late leveller and made Liverpool work hard for their victory, as they did Manchester City 10 days ago, but Steven Gerrard fell to only a second defeat from his first five matches in charge of the Villans.
