Emi Martinez felt Aston Villa deserved greater reward from their trip to Anfield having suffered a last-gasp 2-1 defeat against Liverpool.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 91st-minute strike ensured Villa came away from Merseyside with nothing to show for their efforts after Mohamed Salah’s header had cancelled out Ollie Watkins’ first-half strike, the Villa frontman’s 12th Premier League goal of the season.
It was a cruel finale for Villa, who had earlier hit a post through Trezeguet and looked on course for a share of the spoils.
Speaking to VillaTV post-match, goalkeeper Martinez said: “I don’t think we deserved to lose at the end of this game.
“We played really well, we defended as a unit, little bit lucky with the first goal, we had some chances to go ahead in the game again, we didn’t take them.
“I thought the game management was a little bit poor at times.
“And they got lucky with a good finish at the end.
“But disappointed.”

Martinez added: “I said to them (his team-mates) after the game that we have to put our heads up because we defended really well.
“Obviously when you concede late in the game, like Newcastle or here...we’ve kept 14 clean sheets and one of the best defensive records in the league, it’s credit to them, to be honest.
“Hopefully we can finish strong.”
