John McGinn believes that Aston Villa can't afford to get carried away with their 100% start to the new Premier League campaign.

Dean Smith's side swept Sheffield United and Fulham aside before stunning the world of football by beating Liverpool 7-2 at Villa Park.

McGinn's goal was one of three to deflect past Adrián but he is certain that Villa got exactly what they deserved on the night.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, he said: "It's a bit surreal. We got a fair slice of luck but I don't think anyone can say that we didn't deserve to win the game.

"To a man, we are brilliant.

"We’re not going to get carried away. It’s been an amazing start and we’re delighted."

Ollie Watkins (3), Jack Grealish (2) and Ross Barkley joined McGinn on the scoresheet on an incredible night of football under the Villa Park lights.

McGinn hailed the impact of Watkins in particular, highlighting the striker - along with Grealish and Trezeguet - as a key part of Villa's gameplan against the champions.

He explained: “He was a bit frustrated, he wanted to get his first goal in the Premier League.

"It was a perfect hat-trick and it tops off what has been a great start for him.

"It maybe suited us tonight; we have got pace with Jack, Trez and Ollie and if you can get behind Liverpool's press, you can cause them trouble."
