Ross Barkley was handed his Aston Villa debut against reigning Premier League champions Liverpool.
The loan signing, who arrived this week from Chelsea on a season-long deal, was named in Dean Smith’s starting XI for the encounter at Villa Park (ko 7.15pm).
Barkley’s inclusion was the sole change from the club’s opening two league fixtures, with Conor Hourihane among the substitutes.
Villa head into the encounter on the back of league triumphs against Sheffield United and Fulham.
