Aston Villa Women secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Continental League Cup on Thursday.

Having played out a competitive 1-1 draw with Durham at Graham Sports Centre, Villa won 4-2 in a penalty shootout to secure an extra point and a passage through to the knockout stages.

Villa fell behind to an early effort from the hosts, before Emma Follis levelled the scores late on with a peach of a free-kick.

The result sees Gemma Davies' side through to the next phase of the competition for the second straight season.

As was the case last week at Coventry, Davies shuffled the pack for the this Conti Cup fixture.

Sian Rogers came in for her first appearance since the season opener against Manchester City in September, while Sophie Haywood also returned after a period of self-isolation.

Villa's heavy rotation may have played a factor in a sluggish start, as Durham came flying out of the blocks.

In slightly fortuitous circumstances, Emily Roberts saw her cross-cum-shot loop over Rogers' head and into the net inside five minutes to draw first blood for the hosts.

Villa responded well, however.

Follis, back into the starting XI, twice brought the Durham 'keeper into action with long-distance efforts.

Durham then reacted with two efforts of their own.

Beth Hepple hit the woodwork on two occasions in search of some breathing space, but they couldn't find a way past Rogers as the first half drew to a close.

Villa piled on the pressure at the start of the second half, and were given the chance to level proceedings from the penalty spot.

Stine Larsen, on at half-time for Haywood, grabbed the ball and eyed up the kick with intent.

The Danish striker's firmly struck effort, however, was parried away by the Durham 'keeper.

It looked as though it wasn't going to be Villa's night, but Follis stepped up to bury a free-kick with time ticking away, securing us a draw which sent the tie to spot-kicks.

After Follis missed Villa's first attempt, Nadine Hanssen, Caro Siems and Nat Haigh kept their cool to send Villa through on a successful night up north.
