Mark Delaney was delighted with the start that his team made in their 2-0 win at Stoke City in Premier League 2 on Monday night.

Jaden Philogene-Bidace and Louie Barry got the goals, with the latter playing a key role as Stoke goalkeeper Nathan Broome was dismissed after just nine minutes.

Delaney was thrilled to see his players put their pre-match plan into action, especially against 10 men.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, he said: "What pleased me most is that we started the game really well.

"Especially at Stoke, who are a good side, we spoke about starting well and it put us on the front foot.

"From starting well, we won the ball high up the pitch, Louie tried to go around the goalie and forced a mistake.

"From then on, we gave ourselves a good chance."

Villa had to be patient following the red card but found the opener through Philogene-Bidace just before the half-hour mark.

The hosts looked more threatening after the break but Villa were always in control, with Barry sealing the three points late on.

Three points and a clean sheet ultimately meant a successful night, but Delaney will be aiming for improvements on the second half display.

He said: "We stayed patient, moved the ball really well and got the goal, but the second half was a bit scrappy and they came out with more intensity.

"They made it hard for us, we were a little bit disappointed with the second half as coaches and players.

"We didn't get the game won early, but we stuck with it and got the second goal and a clean sheet."
