Frustrated Dean Smith felt his Aston Villa side deserved “so much more” from Monday’s night’s clash at West Ham United having fallen to a 2-1 defeat.
The Villans dominated the encounter at London Stadium, creating a host of openings and enjoying the bulk of possession, while Ollie Watkins sent a second-half penalty against the crossbar before seeing an injury-time equaliser controversially ruled out by VAR.
Defeat was tough to take for a Villa side who conceded at the start of each half, headers from Angelo Ogbonna and Jarod Bowen sandwiching Jack Grealish’s 20-yard strike.
And head coach Smith was pleased with Villa’s performance despite coming away empty handed.
“I thought we were great, honestly,” he told VillaTV.
“I’m disappointed because of the result, it’s a game we deserved so much more from.
“We were so much better than we were in the last game of last season when we came to West Ham with it all to play for, and that just shows you how far we’ve come with a performance like that.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t taken all three points, which is what we came here for.
“There’s reasons for that, lapses of concentration for their goals, we’ve missed a penalty, missed some big chances and VAR has got one wrong as well.
“It’s there to not get things wrong but unfortunately it has.”
