Aston Villa Chief Executive Christian Purslow has paid tribute to former manager Gerard Houllier following his passing at the age of 73.

Gerard managed the club during the 2010/11 season having previously enjoyed spells in charge at Lens, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Lyon and the France national team among an established career.

All at Aston Villa are deeply saddened by his loss and the thoughts of everyone are with Gerard’s family and friends at this difficult time.

The club will pay its respects with a period of applause ahead of Thursday’s Premier League fixture against Burnley at Villa Park.

Mr Purslow said: “Not only was Gerard a top coach who successfully managed at the highest level for many years, he was also a kind and caring person who was always generous with his time.

“I had the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions and he would always talk about football with a great sense of pride and passion.

“His loss will be felt by everybody here at Aston Villa and throughout the football community.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and friends at this time.”
