Aston Villa Women Head Coach Gemma Davies says her squad are excited and ready for their Barclays Women’s Super League season to get underway.

Villa host Manchester City on Saturday (ko 2.30pm) on opening weekend in their first-ever top-flight season.

The fixture, broadcast live on BT Sport, promises to be a tough start against a firmly established City side.

But Davies insists it is a challenge she and her squad are relishing.

“There’s a lot of excitement around the camp,” she told VillaTV.

“We’re looking forward to the fixture. We’ve got to a point now where we’re ready for gameday.

“It’s been seven weeks. The group are ready.”

Asked about the prospect of facing City in the season opener at Villa Park live on TV, she replied: “It doesn’t (get much bigger).

“Manchester City are a wonderful football team, we are looking forward to the challenge.

“But I think it’s important we play the game, as cliché as it is, and not the occasion that surrounds it.”
