Marisa Ewers has spoken of her pride at captaining Aston Villa Women for their first-ever Barclays Women’s Super League match this weekend.

Villa face Manchester City on Saturday (ko 2.30pm) on opening weekend in their maiden top-flight season, with the fixture broadcast live on BT Sport.

It promises to be a tough start for Gemma Davies' side against a City outfit who finished in second place last term.

But it will be an historic occasion to relish for all involved at the club as Ewers leads the team out at Villa Park, with the German midfielder handed the captain’s armband in her second season.

“For me, personally, that’s a great achievement,” she told VillaTV.

“Coming over to England and joining a team like Aston Villa is great, it’s a huge club and I’m proud of the team that we made it to the Women’s Super League.

“Leading the team out, every week now hopefully, will be a massive achievement for me personally.”

Looking ahead to Saturday, Ewers said: “Man City at Villa Park – what an opener for us.

“Being on national TV as well, is a great start for us, very exciting and a great opportunity that we’ll be playing at Villa Park.

“Playing City in the first game of the season will be a tough challenge but I think we’re ready for that.

“We want that kind of challenge now and that competition.

“In this league, every week you have to be at that level now, you have to compete against that level, I think it’s great for us to get up there as quickly as possible.

“And give our best and see what we can get out of this game.”
