Paul Lambert pointed to the midfield duo of Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph as catalysts for the 3-1 win over Stoke.
Lambert was delighted with the result but also the manner of the performance, with the team playing attacking, fluent football in the basement battle.
While goalscorers like Christian Benteke, Gabby Agbonlahor and Matt Lowton will take the credit, Lambert was quick to hail the performance of his central twosome.
Westwood and Delph did both sides of the role, pinging passes across the park as well as putting their foots in when required as Villa dominated the game from first minute to last.
Statistically Delph was Villa's best player, winning passing, attacking third passing and tackling categories while Westwood appeared very high in the rankings too.
Lambert said: "Westy and Fabian were outstanding in the middle of the pitch.
"There can't be many times Westy gives it away. He was absolutely fantastic for us.
"Delphy is brilliant in terms of the things we ask him to do. He goes unnoticed at times.
"Some people probably think he's an 'up and at them' midfielder but he can play the game.
"I am delighted with him having come back into the team after a couple of weeks out."
