On this day in 2001, Peter Schmeichel became the first goalkeeper to score for Aston Villa in a competitive game – on target in a 3-2 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.
Goals from former Villa defender Steve Watson, Tomasz Radzinski and Thomas Gravesen within the opening 62 minutes saw the hosts open up a comfortable 3-0 lead while Moroccan midfielder Mustapha Hadji reduced the arrears 19 minutes from time.
Schmeichel then became the first goalkeeper to score a goal in the Premier League.
Up for a corner in stoppage time, Steve Staunton's cross broke for him at the back post and he was able to squeeze home a powerful volley.
The goal, which also made the Dane Villa’s oldest goalscorer, proved to be a consolation effort.
