Jimmy Shan beamed with pride after his Under-18 squad collected a third trophy of the season in their final game on Saturday.

A second-half goal from Leon Routh was enough to see the Young Lions past Manchester City at Villa Park to win the Premier League National Final, which came on the back of their triumph in the U18 South division.

Shan’s squad also won the FA Youth Cup against City less than two weeks ago, making it a remarkable campaign for Aston Villa.

“It’s unbelievable, I’m so proud of the boys and of the staff,” he said.

“It wraps up a fantastic season. I spoke to the boys before the game and I said that winning the FA Youth Cup is a big achievement and winning the South section is a big achievement, but if we didn’t win today there would be a bitter taste in my mouth.

“I’m delighted for everybody and for the discipline, dedication and the amount of hours that have been put in outside of work. I’m over the moon for everybody.”

The two sides met again in B6 following a 3-1 victory for Villa in the Youth Cup final, but it was a much different match to the first.

City dominated the first half, but the home side held firm before improving after the break to capture another trophy.

Shan said: “We were flat in the first 45 minutes but found a way to stay in the game and restrict them to efforts from outside the box.

“They’ll look back on the game and think they could have exploited us at crossing situations.

“We looked more like ourselves in the second half – we were braver on the ball and had a bit of calmness in possession.

“For large periods of the second half we deserved the win.”
