Emi Martínez kept a clean sheet overnight as Argentina won 1-0 against Chile to secure top spot in the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup qualifying table with three matches to spare.

Julián Alvarez's first-half goal was enough to seal the points for La Albiceleste at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, with Martínez recording a shut-out having made an impressive early stop from Alexis Sánchez. Emi Buendía and Enzo Barrenechea were unused substitutes.

Lionel Scaloni's side ensured they would finish first in the standings ahead of next summer's tournament, and currently sit 10 points clear of second-placed Ecuador ahead of Wednesday's clash with Colombia (ko 1am).

Thursday saw Joe Gauci and Lucas Digne remain unused substitutes for Australia and France respectively.

The Socceroos moved to the brink of securing World Cup qualification after Aziz Behich's last-gasp goal secured a 1-0 win over Japan in Perth, while Dider Deschamps' side bowed out of the UEFA Nations League at the semi-final stage after a thrilling 5-4 defeat to Spain. They will take on Germany in the third-place play-off on Sunday (ko 2pm).
