Rachel Maltby and England under-17s are through to the FIFA W-U17 World Cup semi-finals in the Dominican Republic.

The Young Lionesses defeated Japan 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out on Sunday evening after the regular 90 minute match ended 2-2.

Maltby, the Aston Villa under-21s defender, smashed home England's second spot-kick to give them an advantage in the shoot-out.

Maltby started for the Young Lionesses in their opening two group stage games as they defeated Kenya 2-0 and Mexico 4-2.

The 17-year-old scored England's third goal over Mexico, the matchwinner, In the 88th minute with a calm first-touch effort inside the box.

The Young Lionesses were beaten by North Korea in their final group stage fixture but, with the side already having secured their place in the knockout round, Maltby, alongside other regular starters, were rested for the game.

The Young Lionesses will face Spain in the semi-finals on Thursday, October 31 (ko 11pm UK time) to battle for a place in the FIFA W-U17 World Cup final.
