Pau Torres had mixed emotions after Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw against midlands neighbours Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

The Spain international defender netted his first goal for the club in the 55th minute before enjoying his celebrations in front of the travelling Villa faithful.

Torres’ leveller quickly cancelled out Hee Chan Hwang’s opener for the hosts and ensured Villa restored parity.

But they were unable to find a winner despite going close three times late on against a Wanderers side who were reduced to 10 men following Mario Lemina’s sending-off.

Nicolò Zaniolo sent a chance inches wide in injury time, Ezri Konsa was then denied by Jose Sa before Ollie Watkins saw his late header rebound off a post in what was the last action of the encounter.

Reflecting on his goal and celebrations, Torres told VillaTV: “I felt the supporters very close to us in that area.

“It was the goal (that secured a) draw, so I was really happy.

“But at the end, we wanted to win.

“We tried all the ways in the last minutes.”

He added: “The team tried all the ways, with Ollie very near in the last action, with Nicolò, Ezri.

“We really tried and we aren’t happy with the point.

“We wanted the three points.

“But now is the international break and we will come back stronger.”

The hard-fought point extends Villa’s unbeaten run in the Premier League to four matches and caps a week which saw the club record wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and HŠK Zrinjski.

The Villans now head into the October international break before resuming domestic action at home to West Ham United.

It was somewhat a game of two halves at Molineux as a first period which saw just one shot on target gave way to a second half of increased action and drama.

Looking back on the all-midlands encounter, Torres said: “In the first half, we didn’t feel very comfortable, only in the last 20 minutes maybe we were with a good structure, in a good position.

“We spoke in the dressing room at half-time and I think the second half was better.

“Unai told us the things we needed to correct.

“And I think we played a good second half.”
