John McGinn saluted a brilliant win at Tottenham Hotspur while the Aston Villa captain also spoke of the desire to remain grounded and humble amid the club’s impressive start to the season.

Villa came from behind to claim a superb 2-1 victory in north London on Sunday, with goals from Ollie Watkins and Pau Torres cancelling out Giovani Lo Celso’s opener in a pulsating encounter.

The high-flying Villans have lost just one of their last 10 matches in all competitions, winning eight, and have now taken 22 points from the last 27 on offer.

It leaves Unai Emery’s side fourth in the Premier League standings after 13 matches.

“What a win,” McGinn told VillaTV, speaking post-match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“First half, we deserved to be behind at half-time, I think. I don’t know if that’s the right thing to say analysing it.

“Second half, we had to be brave, we had to roll our sleeves up.

“The two subs coming on, Youri and Leon, were absolutely outstanding – brave, so clever, Youri’s pass for Olli is outstanding. And it’s a great goal.

“Second half, we were, I wouldn’t say on top, but our gameplan was to perfection.

“And let’s not get away from how good a team they are, they were really, really tough to play against.

“I’m sure as a neutral it was exciting to watch. But from a Villa point of view it was tough, definitely tough, and that makes the result even sweeter.”

The Villans return to European action on Thursday with a home clash against Legia Warszawa, before a trip to AFC Bournemouth and then successive matches against Manchester City and Arsenal at Villa Park.

Skipper McGinn added: “Confidence is sky high, but it’s my job, it’s everyone at the club’s job, the manager, the staff – let’s try and keep a lid on things at the minute, show a bit of humility, respect the league.

“Of course we’re excited, there’s no getting away from that.

“But we need to keep going, there’s a few big games coming up in the next couple of weeks.

“And we’ll see where we are after that.”

Victory at Spurs was Villa’s third on the road in the league this season, mixed with defeats at Newcastle United, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

And McGinn was delighted to be able to help put a smile on the faces of Villa supporters with an away win on their travels.

“We’ve let the away fans down a couple of times this season - Liverpool, Newcastle, Forest,” he said. “And the manager won’t let that lie.

“We analysed the Forest game the other day, into immense detail.

“Our home form is obviously really good but the away form we had to address and I’m sure all the Villa fans who travelled in their numbers will be going back to the pub, their house, wherever, with a big smile on their face.”
