Lucy Staniforth has been called up from England's standby list and will join the Lionesses squad ahead of their pre-FIFA World Cup friendly against Portugal.

The midfielder will be in Sarina Wiegman's matchday squad for their warm-up fixture at the home of Milton Keynes this coming Saturday; she will remain with the Lionesses until the opening match of the tournament against Haiti on Saturday, July 22 in Brisbane.

Lucy last featured for the national team in 2021 but has thoroughly deserved her recall.

The 30-year-old joined Aston Villa on a permanent deal from Manchester United in January and went on to make 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring once.

Staniforth's assured displays at the base of midfield caught the attention of many as Villa ended the campaign with a fifth-place finish in the Barclays WSL.

Congratulations, Stan!
