Aston Villa Women returned from the international break with a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Villa led after an hour following Dan Turner's superb strike in the opening stages, but a quickfire Lauren Hemp double took the game away from Carla Ward and co.

The result consigns Villa to a second consecutive defeat after a four-game winning run had preceded the defeat to Everton at Villa Park.

Carla Ward made two changes from the side that started the Toffees setback prior to the international break.

Lucy Staniforth and Simone Magill were given starting berths in place of Laura Blindkilde Brown and Adriana Leon, respectively.

Villa started the game brightly and should've gone ahead when the ball fell to Jordan Nobbs deep inside the penalty area.

The England international, however, prodded wide of the post via a deflection.

But from the ensuing set-piece, Villa did take the lead.

Turner, who opened her account for the club during last month's Conti Cup win over Sheffield United, scored a spectacular, right-footed volley to draw first blood for the visitors.

City may well have been shellshocked but they responded well, going close when Hemp produced a volley of her own that went just wide.

Their momentum picked up towards the end of the first half and carried on after the break, with Hemp scoring twice in a matter of minutes to turn the tables on Villa.

No chances of real note were created from thereon in, and Villa were ultimately left disappointed with how the afternoon panned out at Joie Stadium.
