Álex Moreno spoke of his happiness after marking his Aston Villa return with the winning goal in Thursday night’s 2-1 victory over Legia Warszawa.

The fit-again left-back was making his maiden appearance of the season having recovered from injury and first outing since May’s draw at Liverpool towards the end of last season.

And Moreno picked the perfect moment to net his first goal in claret and blue as he arrived at the far post to meet Douglas Luiz’s deep free-kick and convert a right-footed volley in the 58th minute.

It secured all three points after Moussa Diaby’s fourth-minute opener had been cancelled out by Ernest Muci’s equaliser.

“I am very, very happy,” Moreno told VillaTV post-match.

“It’s a massive win, an incredible victory.

“For me, it’s very important for (my) comeback, very important to play with my team-mates, for the club.

“It’s also very important to score a goal and it’s a massive win.”

Victory means Unai Emery’s side, who are already assured of their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League, now lead Group E by three points to second-placed Legia, knowing a point at HŠK Zrinjski on matchday six will be enough to seal top spot.

Moreno’s winner came after 194 days on the sidelines having suffered injury at Anfield.

And the Spaniard was keen to stress his gratitude towards everyone who has helped and supported him in his recovery.

“I want to thank everybody,” he said.

“The club, the fans, the physios, the staff, my family, friends, everybody.

“Today is very important for me, for this goal, to play and for my confidence.”
