Aston Villa is sorry to learn of the passing of David Owen, a former club director, who has died at the age of 82.

The thoughts of everyone at the club are with David’s family and friends at this difficult time.

David served on the board as a non-executive director from 1997 to 2006, having previously been a commercial director.

A solicitor, he had been a Villa supporter from the age of four, when his father first took him on the Holte End.

He travelled with the official party to the 1982 European Cup final, and he and his wife Pat came to the rescue when Ugo Ehiogu suffered a fractured eye in a match at Newcastle United in January 1999.

The central defender was injured just before half-time, so the Owen family volunteered to drive him 200 miles back to Birmingham so he could receive urgent treatment at the Eye Hospital.

His daughter June Hacker said: “All mum could remember about the journey was Ugo lying on the back seat and groaning because he was in so much pain.”

Rest in Peace, David.
