John McGinn hailed “a special time to be a Villa player and special time to be a supporter” after the club’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Magnificent Villa recorded a fifth successive Premier League win for the first time in 25 years as they saw off the Magpies.

Victory, and yet another clean sheet, extends the club’s unbeaten run to eight matches, including seven wins, during a stunning sequence which has seen Villa concede just twice.

And they were roared on throughout against Newcastle by the passionate support of the Villa Park faithful.

Asked whether the players fed off the atmosphere, McGinn replied: “Oh, aye.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had an atmosphere as good as that here.

“It’s a special time to be a Villa player, special time to be a supporter.

“I think we’ve got to take stock at this moment and realise how far we’ve come this season.

“There’s no getting away from our performances earlier on in the season, which probably made it look impossible for us to be in this position.

“Bull full credit to everyone, knuckling down, getting ourselves in this position.

“But once we take stock, once we get back in Monday, let’s go, seven games to go and you just never know what can happen.”

Ollie Watkins bagged a brace against United, taking his league tally to 14 for the campaign, after Jacob Ramsey had set the Villans on their way, with McGinn heavily involved in all three goals.

It moved the club on to 50 points with seven matches remaining this term, as Unai Emery’s side currently occupy sixth place in the standings.

And McGinn, when asked if that excitement enters the dressing room, insisted Villa have some big matches approaching between now and the end of the campaign.

“It’s a bit of a balance, I think a few weeks ago it was unfair for us to even talk about Europe,” he said.

“I think the manager has been strong on it in the past couple of weeks, we’ve now put ourselves in a position where we are contenders.

“We’ve got some huge, huge games coming up and if we can feed off the fans’ energy, like here, we’ve got three home games left and we need to get maximum points from those, keep our away form up and then you never know.”
