Danny Ings was happy to have made a telling contribution to Aston Villa’s first away win of the Premier League season on Sunday.

The striker stepped in for Ollie Watkins, who missed out through illness, and scored both goals in a 2-1 win against Brighton & Hove Albion.

His first goal of the afternoon saw Ings hit the 100 career league goals mark, but the 30-year-old’s only concern was helping the team.

Danny Ings celebrates scoring from the penalty spot.

“For me, as long as I’m helping the team I’m extremely happy,” he said.

“It’s a cliché and strikers tell you that all the time but it’s true, whether I’m starting the game or coming on.

“I’m always pleased when other lads are scoring as well; it’s always about the team for me.

“When I’m called upon, I need to help the team as much as I can.”

Villa were well worth their three points thanks to a resilient defensive display after they fell behind inside the opening minute of the match.

Ings did the damage at the other end, and he felt it was strong display on the south coast.

He said: “As a team, I thought we were excellent today.

“We know how good of a footballing team they are and we knew how difficult it was going to be.

“Our grit and determination really got us over the line in the end.”

“It’s never easy conceding so early but I think it woke us up and from that moment on we created a lot of chances,” he added.

“We won the penalty, scored it, and then stayed in the game. We got another chance, scored it, and then saw the game out.”
