Carney Chukwuemeka played a starring role as England got off to a winning start at the European Under-19 Championship on Sunday.

The Villa midfielder found the net and claimed an assist as the Young Lions beat Austria 2-0 in their opening Group B match of the tournament in Slovakia.

Villa trio Chukwuemeka, Aaron Ramsey and Tim Iroegbunam all started the encounter and impressed for England.

Ramsey had already hit a post before being involved in the well-worked move which saw Chukwuemeka open the scoring from six yards in the 43rd minute.

Ramsey saw a second-half strike cleared off the goal-line as the lively Villa attacking duo continued to prove a threat to Austria.

And it was a fine turn and lay-off from Chukwuemeka which set up Alfie Devine for England’s second goal in the 65th minute.

The Young Lions will now be looking to continue their momentum against Serbia on Wednesday (ko 7pm).
