Ben Chrisene is relishing the opportunity to train with the Aston Villa first team during pre-season.

The 18-year-old full-back has been part of Steven Gerrard’s group since the players returned to Bodymoor Heath on Monday, and he’ll also be heading to Australia on the Club’s pre-season tour.

Chrisene, who joined Villa from Exeter City in 2020, is hoping to make a good impression on the coaching staff and his fellow players.

He said: “I did it (train with the first team) last year, so I know what to expect.

“I was definitely more nervous last year as it was a bit more daunting coming into the senior team.

“It’s a great group of lads and they’re very helpful towards the young players, especially the gaffer as well.

“He helps all the young lads settle in and feel part of this team.”

Chrisene’s first season in claret and blue ended with silverware when he helped the Club win the FA Youth Cup, scoring in the final at Villa Park.

His second season was interrupted by injury before he returned to make Villa’s matchday squad and the substitutes bench for five Premier League games.

Chrisene is being patient with his development and believing in the plan laid out for him.

He said: “It’s definitely been gradual and it will still be gradual for the next couple of years because it’s hard for young players transitioning [into the first team].

“The Under-23s and first team, people think it’s only one step away but it’s actually lots of little steps away because the quality and intensity is a lot different.

“I just need to keep going. I’ve got lots of people around me to help me.”
