Aston Villa continued their mid-season preparations against Villarreal at a bitterly cold Villa Park.
Substitute Etienne Capoue bagged the only goal of the game in the 78th minute, while Tyrone Mings hit a post, Emi Buendía struck the crossbar and both sides saw efforts ruled out for offside in a lively encounter.
The second half also saw the returns of Villa trio Matty Cash, Jan Bednarek and Leander Dendoncker having been on international duty at the World Cup, with head coach Unai Emery making a total of 11 changes.
Ahead of kick-off, everyone inside Villa Park stood for a minute’s silence to pay tribute to the four young boys who tragically lost their lives after falling into an icy lake near Solihull.
