Steven Gerrard's side came from behind at the University of the Bolton Stadium thanks to Douglas Luiz's goal straight from a corner, Danny Ings' penalty, Lucas Digne's first for the club and Leon Bailey's solo run and finish.
Villa, five-time winners of the League Cup and runners-up in 2019/20, have now progressed to at least Round 3 of the competition in six of the last eight seasons.
