Mark Delaney is keen to keep pushing his Aston Villa squad to set the pace in Premier League 2.

The Under-23s are top of the table after picking up four wins and a draw from their opening six fixtures, thrashing Stoke City 8-0 last time out.

And ahead of Friday night’s game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which will be shown live on VillaTV+, Delaney believes there is more to come from his players.

He said: “The most pleasing thing is that performances have been there. The consistency of performance during games hasn’t been perfect, there have been times where we’ve been very good and spells where we’ve dropped off.

“We’ve got a bit of consistency work to do within the 90 minutes, but after six games we are where we are and we’ve done well in the EFL Trophy winning that game.

“I can’t ask any more of the players at the minute, but I certainly will be pushing them on.”

Cameron Archer became the latest homegrown Villan to make a Premier League appearance when he was introduced off the bench against Manchester United last weekend, showing once again that the Academy is moving in a positive direction.

And Delaney believes that a number of the current Under-23 squad have the ability to follow the path to the first team if they continue to push on.

He said: “Within the group, in my opinion I have some players that could go to the highest level.

“I’m excited about this group. I’ve been excited since I took the job with the players that we’ve got and the players underneath them.

“The future of the Academy is really, really positive. When you’ve got that shining light above where Cameron and Carney are getting up there, it shows players there is a pathway. That’s exciting for them as well.”
