Silva and Portugal were agonisingly close to qualifying for next summer's championships as Group E winners, but were edged out by Finland following a 1-0 defeat in their penultimate group-stage fixture.
The all-important two-legged tie against the Russians will take place on April 9th & 13th, with the victor securing a place at next summer's finals in England.
